Hourly rate or fixed monthly price: which is better?
Hourly rates look cheap, monthly prices are easier to plan. How each works for a remote expert, a worked example and what to ask before you sign.
An hourly rate is a price per hour of work, so your monthly cost moves with the hours billed. A fixed monthly price stays the same whatever the month brings. Hourly suits small, irregular tasks. A fixed monthly price suits ongoing work, because you can plan it. AnantaSutra charges one fixed monthly price per expert, from ₹20,000 to ₹60,000 a month, depending on the expert's skills, experience and the work. No extra fees, no lock-in.
What each model really sells you
An hourly rate sells you hours. You pay for the time that is logged, so a quiet week costs less and a busy week costs more. Dotsquares estimates hourly rates for developers in India at $15 to over $80, depending on experience (checked October 2026). The headline number is small and easy to compare, which is why it is popular in quotes.
A fixed monthly price sells you a person. The same expert works on your priorities every month and the price does not change with the hours. Analytics Insight's 2026 estimates for dedicated developers are quoted per month: $2,000-$3,500 for a junior, $3,500-$6,000 for mid-level and $6,000-$10,000 for a senior. They are estimates, not quotes.
Neither is cheaper by nature. The question is how many hours you will really use, and how much you value knowing the bill in advance.
A worked example, with made-up numbers
Say a provider quotes $30 an hour, billed monthly. These numbers are an illustration, not a real quote.
| Month | Hours billed | Bill at $30 an hour |
|---|---|---|
| A quiet month | 120 | $3,600 |
| A normal month | 160 | $4,800 |
| A launch month | 200 | $6,000 |
The same expert, at the same rate, costs $2,400 more in the launch month than in the quiet one. That is fine if you wanted that flexibility. It is a surprise if you had budgeted from the "$30" alone.
With a fixed monthly price, the three months cost the same. Your exposure is the other way round: in a quiet month you still pay the full amount, because you are paying for the expert's place in your team, not for the hours.
When hourly is the better choice
- The work is small and defined. A one-off audit, a bug fix or a landing page needs a few hours, not a team member.
- The workload is very uneven. Two busy weeks followed by two empty ones favour paying per hour.
- You are testing. Before you know whether a role is worth a full seat, a few billed hours are a cheap way to find out.
- You manage the work closely. Hourly billing works best when you decide what happens each day and can check the hours against it.
When a fixed monthly price is the better choice
- The work is ongoing. Product development, marketing and operations run for months, and a person who has learned your business is worth more in month three than in month one.
- You need to plan. A founder with a fixed budget wants to know next quarter's cost today.
- You do not want to police hours. Time sheets create a small argument every month. A fixed price removes it.
- You want continuity. One dedicated expert in your team, with one accountable point of contact, instead of a rotating set of people who log hours.

How to compare an hourly quote with a monthly price
Convert both to the same period, usually six months, then ask the questions below in writing.
- How many hours a month will this really take? Ask for the provider's own estimate and what happens when it is exceeded.
- What counts as billable? Meetings, standups, waiting for your reply and sick days are treated differently by different providers.
- Is there a cap or a minimum? An hourly rate with a minimum of 160 hours is a monthly price in disguise.
- What is charged on top? Ask about set-up, recruitment, replacement and tools. With us there is no recruitment fee and no extra fees.
- Who is the person? Ask whether you get the same named expert every month, and how a replacement works. We offer a 48-hour replacement guarantee; whoever you hire, read the written terms before you decide.
- What can you change, and when? We have no lock-in, and you can scale up or pause anytime. Ask every provider the same.
A sheet of paper with two columns, hourly on the left and monthly on the right, is enough. Fill it with each provider's own answers, not their website headline.
Common mistakes
- Comparing a rate with a price. "$30 an hour" and "a fixed price a month" are different units. Convert both to a month of the hours you expect before deciding.
- Forgetting your own time. On an hourly deal you track hours and approve invoices. Count that time too.
- Choosing hourly for ongoing work. It looks cheaper in month one and can cost more by month six, once the hours grow.
- Choosing monthly for a one-off task. If the job ends in two weeks, a fixed monthly price is more than you need. A freelancer or the AI automation service may fit better.
FAQ
Is an hourly rate cheaper than a fixed monthly price?
Not always. An hourly rate is cheaper in a quiet month and dearer in a busy one. Estimate your real hours first, multiply, and compare the total with the monthly price. For work that runs every month, the two often come out close, and the monthly price is easier to plan.
What does AnantaSutra charge?
One fixed monthly price per expert, from ₹20,000 to ₹60,000 a month, depending on the expert's skills, experience and the work. No extra fees, no recruitment fee and no lock-in. You see the price before your expert starts, and you can scale up or pause anytime.
Can I start hourly and move to monthly later?
It can work, because a few billed hours show whether a role is worth a full place in the team. If the work becomes ongoing, ask your provider to move you to a monthly arrangement and get the new terms in writing.
What should I ask before I sign either kind of deal?
Ask what is billable, what is charged on top, how a replacement works and how you can stop. Get the answers in writing, and compare them across providers over the same six months.
