How much does it cost to hire a dedicated developer in India?

2026 estimates put a dedicated developer in India at $2,000 to $10,000 a month. What drives the cost, the hidden costs and how to compare quotes.

PayScale puts the average software developer in India at about ₹7.2 lakh (₹720,000) a year in base pay (2026). Analytics Insight's 2026 estimates for a dedicated developer run from $2,000 (junior) to $10,000 (senior) a month. AnantaSutra charges one fixed monthly price, from ₹20,000 to ₹60,000 a month, depending on the expert's skills, experience and the work. No extra fees.

Salary figures and price quotes measure different things

Salary data shows what developers earn. On PayScale (July 2026, 2,101 profiles), the bottom tenth earn ₹2.9 lakh a year or less in base pay, and the top tenth ₹20 lakh or more.

Price estimates show what a provider charges you. They run much higher: Appsierra's estimates reach $8,000 to $13,000 a month for tech leads and architects (checked October 2026). Most come from companies that sell development services, so treat them as estimates, not market data.

A provider's monthly price covers the developer's pay, its own costs (such as finding and vetting people) and its margin. Every provider prices this way, ours included, so ask "what does this price include?", not just "what is the rate?"

What drives the monthly cost

  1. Experience. PayScale's 2026 data puts average total pay at about ₹4.8 lakh a year with under a year of experience and ₹6.5 lakh at 1-4 years.
  2. Skill level. A developer who can own a feature, review code and ship safely needs less of your time, and costs more. Analytics Insight's 2026 estimates show the jump: $2,000 to $3,500 a month for a junior, $3,500 to $6,000 for mid-level and $6,000 to $10,000 for a senior.
  3. Stack. Scarce skills cost more. Appsierra estimates AI/ML and data engineers at $6,500 to $12,000 a month, against $2,500 to $8,000 for developers overall (checked October 2026).
  4. Location. Pay for the same role differs between cities, and needing someone in your office narrows the pool. For remote work it matters less than skills and experience.
  5. Engagement model. Full-time, part-time, hourly and fixed-price work are priced differently. Dotsquares estimates hourly rates at $15 to over $80, depending on experience (checked October 2026). Part-time or hourly work costs less per month, but buys less of the developer's time.

Hiring routes compared: what you really pay for

These are general patterns, so check each provider's terms.

Ask about In-house hire Freelancer Agency Dedicated expert (AnantaSutra)
How you pay Monthly salary Per hour, task or milestone Retainer or fixed project price One fixed monthly price per expert
One-off costs Job ads, recruiter charges, laptop Marketplace charges, if any Any discovery or set-up charge No recruitment fee
On top of the headline Employer provident fund (PF) where it applies, leave, benefits, tools Extra hours, rate rises Work outside the agreed scope No extra fees
Time to start The search, then their notice period Days, if they are free After scoping and a contract Live in about 7 days
Who manages the work You You The agency's project manager You set priorities; one accountable point of contact
If it is not working Start the search again Find and brief someone new Depends on the contract 48-hour replacement guarantee
Commitment Employment contract and notice Usually per task The contract term No lock-in; scale up or pause anytime

A freelancer is often right for a small, defined task, and an agency for a fixed project with a manager attached. A dedicated expert pays off when the work is ongoing and one person should learn your business. If the job is a single automation rather than ongoing development, our AI automation service may fit better than any hire. Hidden costs to check before you sign

Whichever route you choose, get answers to these in writing:

  • Notice periods. An in-house hire usually serves notice at their current job first. ThePeoplesBoard estimated in July 2026 that roughly one in three IT roles in India carries a 90-day notice clause, and cited Quantalent research putting a senior engineering hire at 12 to 16 weeks end to end, notice included.
  • Offers that fall through. An accepted offer is not a joined hire. The same article cites SHRM India figures of 28% offer dropout at global capability centres and 38% at Indian product startups in 2025. Each dropout restarts the clock.
  • Replacement time. If someone leaves or is the wrong fit, ask how fast someone new starts, whether it costs extra and who covers the gap. Each new person also needs time to learn your code and your business.
  • Management time. Someone has to set priorities, review the work and unblock the developer. Count your own hours as part of the cost, on every route.
  • Tools and access. Laptops, licences, cloud accounts and security set-up add up. Agree who provides what, and have email, tools, files and the team group ready on day one.

A worked example with our price

Say you need one developer for 6 months of ongoing product work. With AnantaSutra:

  • Price: one fixed monthly price, from ₹20,000 to ₹60,000 a month, depending on the expert's skills, experience and the work. You see it before your expert starts.
  • 6 months: 6 times your expert's monthly price.
  • On top: no recruitment fee, no extra fees and no lock-in. You can scale up or pause anytime.
  • Still on your side: your time to set priorities and review the work, and access to your tools.

Price every other option over the same 6 months, add the hidden costs above, and compare totals, not headline rates.

FAQ

Does an in-house developer cost more than their salary?

Yes. On top of the salary come recruiting costs, employer contributions such as PF where they apply, leave, equipment and tools, plus the weeks of notice before they join. Add your own management time, then compare the total with any provider's monthly price.

Is hourly or monthly pricing better?

Hourly suits small, irregular tasks, because you pay only for the hours used. Monthly suits ongoing work, because the cost is fixed and easy to plan. Either way, ask in writing what is billed beyond the headline rate.

How quickly can a dedicated developer start?

An in-house hire has to be found and then serve notice, which can take months. With AnantaSutra, you interview 2-3 vetted experts for the role, and the one you choose is live in about 7 days.

What if the developer is not the right fit?

Get the replacement terms in writing before you sign, whoever you hire. With us there is a 48-hour replacement guarantee and no lock-in, and you can scale up or pause anytime.
