India vs US developer cost: what to compare

A US developer's pay and an India developer's price are not like-for-like numbers. Here is what to compare before you decide where to hire.

An India developer is usually cheaper than a US developer, but the two numbers are rarely the same kind of number. A US figure is often a salary, and an India figure is often a vendor's monthly or hourly price. Compare the full monthly cost, the contract terms, who employs the person, and the overlap in working hours. Only then does the gap mean something.

Why the headline numbers mislead

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median annual pay of $135,980 for software developers in May 2025. That is pay, not the cost to the employer. Health cover, payroll taxes, equipment and recruiting come on top, and they vary by state and company.

Now look at what you usually see for India: a rate card, an hourly rate or a monthly price from a vendor. It may include the developer's pay, the vendor's margin, equipment and management, or it may not. Without asking, you cannot tell.

So a line such as "India is 70% cheaper" compares a salary with a price. It may be true or false for your case. It is not evidence.

Six things to put side by side

Question Why it changes the answer
What is the full monthly cost? Ask for everything you will pay in a month, and anything billed separately
Who employs the developer? It decides who handles contracts, PF, TDS and leave
What is the minimum term? A lock-in turns a low rate into a fixed commitment
How fast can they start? Weeks of an empty seat are a cost too
What if it does not work out? A written replacement time protects you, a promise does not
How many hours overlap with your team? Overlap decides how fast questions get answered

If a provider cannot answer these six in writing, the comparison is not finished.

Hourly rate, monthly price or salary

Three pricing shapes are in use, and each hides something different.

  • Hourly rate. Easy to compare, but your monthly bill depends on hours billed. Ask what happens in a slow week, and whether the rate holds past the first month.
  • Monthly price. Easier to budget. Ask what it covers and what is charged separately. We compare these two in hourly vs fixed monthly price.
  • Salary on your payroll. You carry every cost of employment. Our piece on what a full-time hire in India costs beyond salary lists them.

Time zones and working style

A developer in India and a team in the US share few working hours, so some overlap must be agreed on. A fixed daily window of two or three hours often works for standups and reviews, with the rest of the day as focused work. For work that needs live back and forth all day, price that friction into your decision. For work with clear tickets and written briefs, it matters less.

Cost is also not only about rate. A cheaper developer who needs three rounds of explanation per task can cost more per finished task than a pricier one who needs one. Ask for a sample of past work and a short paid trial task instead of judging on rate alone.

Where a dedicated expert fits

AnantaSutra places a vetted, dedicated expert inside your team for one fixed monthly price, from ₹20,000 to ₹60,000 a month depending on the expert's skills, experience and the work. There is no extra fee, no recruitment fee and no lock-in, and you can scale up or pause any time. You tell us the role on a 30-minute call, we hand-pick and vet 2-3 experts, you interview them and choose, and the expert is live in about 7 days. Details are on the dedicated experts page.

This suits a team that wants one clear monthly number to compare with a US salary. It does not replace the cost-to-company work above: do that sum for your own team as well. If you are weighing a vendor against other models, staff augmentation vs a dedicated expert and the cost of hiring a dedicated developer in India cover the same ground. FAQ

Is an India developer always cheaper than a US developer?

Usually the monthly cost is lower, but not always by the amount a headline claims. Compare the full monthly cost, the contract terms and the time you spend managing, not one rate against another.

Is a US salary the same as what a US employer pays?

No. A salary is what reaches the employee. The employer also pays taxes, benefits, equipment and recruiting. The BLS figure above is pay only.

How do I compare an hourly rate with a monthly price?

Multiply the hourly rate by the hours you expect to use in a month, including slow and busy weeks, and then add anything billed separately. Compare that total with the monthly price and its stated inclusions.

Do I need time-zone overlap?

Some overlap helps most teams. Agree on a daily window for standups and reviews, and write down how questions are answered outside it.
