Staff augmentation vs a dedicated expert: what is the difference?
Staff augmentation adds outside people to your team. A dedicated expert is one vetted specialist in your team for a fixed monthly price. How to choose.
Staff augmentation means a provider supplies outside people who work under your direction, usually for a set period. A dedicated expert is the same idea made narrower: one vetted specialist placed in your team for one fixed monthly price per expert. Choose by how many people you need, how clear the price is and how soon you must start.
What staff augmentation means
In staff augmentation you keep control of the work and the provider supplies the people. You decide the tasks, the tools and the daily priorities. The provider handles sourcing and, usually, the contract.
It is a big category. One market research report puts global staff augmentation services at USD 131.25 billion in 2026 (360iResearch, accessed 19 October 2026). Treat any such figure with care, because analysts define the market differently and their totals vary widely.
Most of that money goes to large IT vendors that supply several people at once. That works well for big programmes. It is less suited to a founder who needs one specialist.
Where a dedicated expert is different
A dedicated expert is a form of staff augmentation, with three practical differences:
- One person for one role. You are not buying a block of people. You are filling one gap.
- A shortlist, not a pitch. We hand-pick and vet 2-3 experts as options for that role. You interview them and choose one.
- A price you can read first. One fixed monthly price per expert, from ₹20,000 to ₹60,000 a month, depending on the expert's skills, experience and the work. No extra fees, no lock-in.
The expert joins your Slack, WhatsApp and standups. Onboarding takes about 7 days. You get weekly reviews, a monthly report and one accountable point of contact.

When staff augmentation fits better
Be honest about the trade-off. If you need a team of ten engineers for an 18-month programme, a large vendor with its own project management may suit you better than one dedicated expert. If you need a fixed deliverable with no management from you, an agency is the closer fit.
A dedicated expert fits when you can name the role, you will manage the work and you want a clear monthly cost. We also cover domains beyond engineering: AI and data, design, marketing, video, legal, healthcare, finance, real estate and more.
How to decide in ten minutes
Write down three things before you talk to any provider.
The outcome. What should be true 30 days after the person starts? A launched feature, a running ad account, a cleaned-up book of accounts. If you cannot name an outcome, you are not ready to hire for the role yet, and no model will fix that.
The size of the gap. Count the roles. One or two gaps usually point to dedicated experts or freelancers. Five or more, running for a year, is the territory of large staff augmentation vendors.
Your management time. Both models assume you direct the work. Decide how many hours a week you can give. If the answer is almost none, you want an agency that owns the deliverable, not any form of augmentation.
Then compare the price on the same basis. A day rate, an hourly rate and a monthly price are hard to compare until you convert them to what you will pay in a month for the work you actually need. A fixed monthly price removes that step, which is why we publish ours.
What to prepare for the first call
A good call is short when you arrive prepared. Bring the role, the outcome from above, a budget range and the date you want someone working. With that, a 30-minute call is enough for us to start shortlisting. You then interview the 2-3 experts we send and choose one. Nobody is placed in your team without your decision.
Five questions to ask any provider
- What is the full monthly price, and is anything charged on top?
- What is the minimum term, and can I pause?
- Can I interview more than one person before I choose?
- How fast can a replacement start, and is it in writing?
- Who manages the expert day to day?
If a provider will not answer the first question before a call, that tells you something.
